Mixed, High-End Materials

With the ever-evolving trends in kitchen design, there’s always a question of what’s going to trend and what will be timeless. Lately, we’re seeing the industry shift away from all-white kitchens to mixed cabinetry materials and colors contrasting with high-end countertops and backsplashes. Homeowners are adding more texture and organic materials to their kitchens to create warmth and increase the contrast of their space. High-end materials like organic stone, reclaimed wood, and natural woodgrains are intently sought after with the current demand of supply.

To further elevate the kitchen, we’ve been adding sophisticated decorative range hoods, a variety of mixed cabinet colors, and ribbed details. We’ve also seen the rise of the dark bold kitchen and color pops to create contrast and drama to this space.

For backsplashes and countertops, think of incredibly durable materials that can mimic the look of expensive natural materials. With the latest developments in countertop fabrication, these surfaces provide it all -- distinctive looks paired with the practicality of low maintenance.

Prep Kitchens

You can never have too much storage space in the kitchen. Recently we have been incorporating additional preparation kitchens into our upcoming builds. This separate kitchen space allows more opportunity for functionality and organization with the added storage of shelving, cabinetry, and space for those kitchen appliances you want out-of-view. They also keep your main kitchen area aesthetically pleasing and minimal and can be a great setup for your modern entertaining needs.

Walk-in Pantry

Speaking of storage, a practical setup for a sleek kitchen design is having a custom walk-in pantry. Keeping the bulk of your food storage and additional kitchen tools out of sight is key to a clutter-free and effortless kitchen. Today there are more options than ever before to maximize the usage and ease of these spaces with organization tools, storage options, custom shelving, and lighting.

Open-Concept with Strong Outdoor Connections

Open-concept kitchens are here to stay given that they provide such practical use of expansive space to cook and gather. These kitchens often provide tons of natural lighting and create an opportunity for strong outdoor connections to a patio or outdoor dining space.

Incorporating bi-folding accordion-style doorways from the kitchen and dining to an outdoor patio has been the highlight of a few recent and upcoming projects. It has become an elegant way to entertain in the summer and can help bring scenic views into your home all year long.

Specialty Appliances

A modern dream home will look to incorporate the industry’s leading appliances and gadgets. Swanson Homes works with our clients and trusted partners to make selections that fit both the lifestyle and budget of each family.

State of the art appliances can include:

  • Two ovens with interactive control screens and interior cameras
  • Microwave/convection oven
  • A gas or induction hob (depending on preference)
  • Immersion cooking & Sous Vide capabilities
  • A fridge & freezer - sometimes separated column versions, often with custom paneling
  • Wine Fridge
  • Camouflaged dishwashers with the quietest of running cycles
  • Smart appliances
  • Countertop gadgets from coffee machines to toasters

Large Islands & Double Islands

With the island being the social hub of your kitchen, it can be a great avenue to make a design statement. We’re seeing more standout islands with a pop of contrasting color or cabinetry material. Hidden storage underneath the island has become a must for clients, and for our kitchens with a larger footprint, a double island is both necessary and the perfect place for kids and guests to perch.

Well-Planned Kitchen Lighting Scheme

Lighting in your kitchen should be both practical and aesthetically pleasing. You will need to provide different levels of lighting to suit all tasks, especially if your space is open-concept and includes your dining space. You will need bright lights where you cook and prep and softer ambient lighting over seating areas. A modern luxury kitchen will usually include pendant lighting over the island and a statement chandelier fixture over the dining area.

We often recommend a practical installation of separate circuits to control under-cabinet lighting, lighting over the island and work surfaces, and the lighting over the dining area.

Breakfast Nook

Last but not least, a kitchen detail occasionally included in our new construction homes -- the sunny breakfast nook. A breakfast nook, depending on kitchen design and layout, can be the perfect extension to a family’s kitchen. Often fitting perfectly into a corner space, we encourage big window and bench seating for the ideal natural setting.
